Bethesda Veteran Issues Fallout 5 Warning As The Wasteland Goes Quiet

Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI are apparently top priorities for Xbox.

2026 still has a packed gaming calendar that includes Goliaths like Marvel's Wolverine and GTA VI, but beyond that, there's plenty to keep draining our wallets. Alien: Isolation 2, BioShock 4, God of War Laufey, and a Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel are but a few of them, while Bethesda also has its plate full.

Following on from the success of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Bethesda's upcoming behemoths include Marvel's Blade, Fallout 5, and The Elder Scrolls VI. While we've been waiting for what feels like an eternity for the last two, we're settling in for an even longer wait until we've got them in our hands. Our last update pencilled in The Elder Scrolls VI for 2028 or 2029, and if this is the case, Fallout 5 will likely be even further away. Could we really be facing 15 years between Fallout games?

A Warning From The Wasteland

We last got a mainline Fallout game back in 2015, while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released all the way back in 2011. Even though The Elder Scrolls VI has already beaten GTA VI's impressive timespan between games, one Bethesda veteran has waded into the Fallout 5 fracas. Speaking to FRVR, Skyrim lead designer Bruce Nesmith said Bethesda has to be careful in terms of trying to rush these massive releases out just for the sake of appeasing disgruntled gamers. More than this, releasing them too close together could cause them to cannibalise themselves through fan fatigue.

Nesmith reiterated: "There is an old adage in software development about the process having three corners: resources, time, and quality The studio decides two of them, which determines the third.

"If you lock down the resources and the schedule, that decides the quality you will achieve. If you lock down the quality and the schedule, that determines the resources you will need to complete the project."

Reminding us that the latter is largely out of Bethesda's control, Nesmith said "over-committing to any one of the corners increases friction and becomes less effective."

Still Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI have to release sooner rather than later, with him concluding: "Allowing ten years for a project creates a cycle of endless reinvention and ultimate failure."

Having worked on Bethesda games from 1996's The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall to Starfield, Nesmith thinks the 'sweet spot' of releases between games is around three years. Then again, as the industry continues to evolve and we're arguably more spoilt for choice, this has become a 'moving target'.

The Fallout Renaissance

Nesmith's warning comes following reports that Microsoft wanted to ramp up production on Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI. Both have been pitched as top priorities for the green team, but with these being some of the biggest IPs now shackled to Xbox, we're not surprised. The Elder Scrolls has largely never gone away due to the continued rereleases and repackagings of Skyrim, whereas Fallout has had something of a resurgence.

Fallout 76 finally managed to turn things around after a somewhat troubled launch, while Amazon's live-action Fallout series has been praised as a faithful continuation of the story of the games. Added to this, it feels like barely a day goes by when someone isn't talking about mythical Fallout 3 or New Vegas remasters. Bethesda might be wise to take a leaf out of Capcom's book, which has had huge success punctuating its new mainline Resident Evil releases with remakes of classic titles. As the years rumble on, we find ourselves asking what we'll get first: a New Vegas remaster or Fallout 5.
