Bethesda has given a rare update on the exact whereabouts of Fallout 5, but fans of the series probably aren’t going to be happy with the news.
It’s been well over a decade since Fallout 4, and with how development on The Elder Scrolls VI is going, it sounds like the next single-player game in the series is still going to be a ways away.
A new report has given a rough update on the timeline for the next Elder Scrolls, which in turn has also given us a rough estimate of how long it’ll be until we see Fallout 5.
Xbox insider Jez Corden reports on the Xbox Two podcast (via ComicBook) that Bethesda won’t be looking to release The Elder Scrolls VI until “2028 or 2029”, meaning even if things go well, we’re still looking at another two years until our next Tamriel adventure.

This obviously puts the status of Fallout 5 into question, which Bethesda has previously stated would only be made once The Elder Scrolls VI is out of the oven.
If we’re assuming a development cycle of around five or six years, which is what The Elder Scrolls VI would get following Starfield if it released in 2028 or 2029, then that means Fallout 5 won’t be seen until 2033 at the earliest, but could come as late as 2035, a whole twenty years after the previous game.
What seems ridiculous about this is that it would put it late into the lifespan of the next generation of consoles, potentially even putting it as a PS7 game.
Not only that, but it would mean Bethesda completely wasted the hype generated by the television show airing on Amazon Prime Video, as the series will have surely ended by then.
All hope is not lost, though, because while our next new Fallout adventure may still be a decade away, remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas are rumoured to be in the final throes of development.
These rumours have persisted since 2023, but more leaks that have surfaced lately point to a 2026 or 2027 release of at least one of the remasters.
In the same podcast, Corden states that “I’ve heard that like, I don’t know how true this is, but one thing I heard is Fallout remasters are probably a little bit further off than people think, and The Elder Scrolls 6 is still quite far away.
“I suppose that getting some of those games out more quickly is probably something they’re probably very thinking is top of mind for them.”
In any case, with hype for the Fallout franchise at an all-time high right now, it makes sense to get something out that will satiate fans’ thirst for more content until the next mainline game can be released.
