Fallout 5 Gets Surprise Development Update, Bad News if You Ask Me

Let us set the world on fire again

We have now passed the tenth anniversary of the release of Fallout 4, and as brilliant as that game is, the community is desperate to get some new adventures underway in the endless wastes of the post-apocalypse.

This anticipation has only been furthered by the release of the second season of the excellent TV adaptation on Prime Video, which is giving us a look at the timeline beyond the events of Fallout 4.

Given that the show is officially canon, we have now started to see some of the characters appear in other Fallout properties, most notably with Walton Goggins’ Ghoul showing up in Fallout 76 as an NPC who provides quests and other interesting items and lore tidbits.

The potential for further crossover is definitely most possible in a brand new Fallout release, but if new information is to be believed, it might be a while before we get our hands on the next game in the mainline series.

Fallout 5 Greenlit, But Still Years Away

As first reported by Windows Central, Fallout 5 has supposedly just been green lit by Bethesda's tech giant parent company Microsoft, officially giving them the go ahead to ramp into full production.

Now, while this is technically good news, it's also pretty disappointing for those of us who wanted to see the game within the next couple of years, because that simply isn't viable given the fact that it has just been approved.

It's obviously always been clear that the priority for Bethesda was always going to be The Elder Scrolls VI next, particularly given how long it's been since the release of Skyrim, which still serves as the last main game in the series.

It's little surprise that Microsoft has chosen to approve a new Fallout game, even with the likely enormous production budget that it would require. The popularity of the franchise is basically an all-time high and it's going to serve as a license to print money for some time to come yet.

In the meantime, we're going to have to hope that the swirling rumours around a potential remake or remaster of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas have some truth to them, though again it might be a little while before we actually get to play either of them.

At least we still have some episodes of the show to go, with a new season supposedly on the way next year to keep everyone interested.
