A relatively trustworthy source has just revealed that Fallout 4 will be getting an official update soon, assumedly just ahead of season 2 of Amazon’s Fallout TV series in December… but fans don’t like the sound of Bethesda’s reported plans for said update.
It has (somehow already) been over a year since Bethesda dropped the “Next Gen” patch for Fallout 4, back in April 2024.
Said “Next Gen” update was controversial itself, mostly due to the fact that it introduced a bunch of performance issues and new bugs.
Well, get ready for a brand new controversial update, because modding aficionado JuiceHead revealed in a recent video that a new update will be coming to Fallout 4 in the coming months… and it’ll be adding paid mods to the game.

So, firstly, before we get into this, I just wanted to state for the record that I have heard something very, very similar to this from other sources. I’m just a lowly journalist and not a Jason Schreier-level insider or anything, though, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
Some of you might be a little confused by the idea of adding “paid mods” to Fallout 4, because the Creation Club content in the game already is technically a form of paid modding.
Assumedly, Fallout 4’s new update would alter the system they have in place to be more in line with Skyrim and Starfield’s paid modding system, which allows approved modders to add paid content to the game through the Creations marketplace.
The difference here is that the Creation Club content we already have in Fallout 4 is a collaborative endeavour between Bethesda and modders, whereas the Creations system in Skyrim and Starfield simply allows any approved modder to release content, without Bethesda’s oversight.

Over on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, commenters aren’t taking the news too well.
“Can't wait to pay £9.99 for one AI generated power armour skin! What a time to be alive”, commented user ArcanaOfApocrypha.
“F**k that, I can see Creation Club being flooded with AI generated mods. give us Fallout 3/New Vegas remasters”, replied user Makoto_Yuki4.
I absolutely understand why people are upset about this, but it kind of seemed like an inevitability to me.

This is something that Bethesda has been pushing for since 2015, back when they tried (and failed, due to pushback) to add a similar thing to Skyrim.
However, they have, of course, added something similar to their other games since then, so it only seemed like a matter of time before they added it to Fallout 4.
