Forget Resident Evil Requiem, Upcoming Rival Looks 10x Scarier

Ritual Tides isn't for the faint of heart

I’m assuming many of you have likely now rolled credits on Resident Evil Requiem, perhaps several times even.

You might be wondering where you’re going to get your next horror fix.

Well, I’d like to point you in the direction of Ritual Tides which looks so positively terrifying that I could ideally do with Leon Kennedy holding my hand to help me get through this article.

Developed by Vertpaint, Ritual Tides is an upcoming horror that’s being created in Unreal Engine 5.

Interestingly, it pitches itself as “an immersive gaming experience”. I’d argue all gaming experiences are immersive, so I’m curious to dive into exactly what it is that Ritual Tides is offering.

The game will play from a first-person perspective and takes inspiration from cosmic Lovecraftian horror.

A full synopsis is not yet available, but it looks as if the player character finds themselves on a mysterious island inhabited by plenty of monstrous creatures.

It’s that classic narrative formula of waking up and having to figure out how you ended up there. I suppose rituals will play into that if the title is anything to go by.

Ritual Tides’ Gameplay Trailer Reveals Horrific Spider-Inspired Enemies

You can see the game’s gameplay reveal trailer below. I wouldn’t recommend it if you have a fear of spiders.

That trailer confirms there’s gunplay as we see the player character shooting down a series of horrendously large arachnids.

The face that pops up after that genuinely made me jump but I don’t claim to have nerves of steel.

The very end of the trailer reveals perhaps my worst nightmare in gaming, walking through a dark, confined space only for a nightmarish creature to pop out.

Vertpaint is a brand new studio with former Rockstar Games, CI Games, and TT Games developers all involved, so that certainly bodes well.

It’s a very brief glimpse that’s been revealed so far, but I’m impressed by the creature design, atmosphere created, and graphics.

Very little has been said on when and where we can expect to play Ritual Tides.

The game has launched a website where visitors are prompted to follow the game’s Instagram and join its Discord community.

There is also a link to wishlist the game on Steam, so PC is confirmed although it doesn’t yet work, reading “coming soon”.

Let’s hope there’s a plan for consoles further down the line.

The game's Instagram does describe Ritual Tides as “the first game in a new horror saga” which gives us some inkling as to the ambition of this studio.

It’s certainly a terrifyingly cool premise that’s been shown off so far.
