Fallout 3: GOTY Edition free to download and keep from next week

Fallout 3, also known as one of the best open-world role-playing games of the last 20 years, will soon be free to download and keep.

Okay, so there can’t be that many people out there who have yet to play Bethesda’s incredible 2008 classic. And yes, these days you can probably pick it up in your local CeX for less than a fiver if you’ve a hankering to play it. But this is free. Free.

While you're here why not check out the amazing new trailer for Fallout: London?

Starting October 20, the post-apocalyptic adventure will be entirely free to download and keep for all PC users with a registered Epic account via the Epic Games Store. Even better, this is the GOTY Edition, which includes all five add-on DLCs and does away with the dumbass ending in which your character dies no matter what choice they make. Thanks, Bethesda.

If you’ve never experienced the Capital Wasteland in all its glory, you’re in for a treat. Fallout 3 is vast without ever becoming unfocused (unlike Fallout 4) and is filled with fascinating stories to explore. Whether you’re helping out a mutant tree and stumbling across a skeletal corpse with the remains of its penis in a fan, it’s a game guaranteed to make you think.

The soundtrack and atmosphere are also on point. Wandering through the nuked ruins of Washington while Billie Holiday croons to you from across time is truly goosebumps-inducing stuff.

The long and short of it, really, is that you should go play Fallout 3. And if you already have? Go play it again, obviously.
