We should be used to lengthy game development cycles by now, but that doesn’t make the wait for The Elder Scrolls VI any more bearable.

At least we know it’s coming, but that’s about all we do know. Starfield may have launched last year but it very much remains the key focus at Bethesda. Several community-requested features should drop in the coming months, including the long-awaited addition of city maps. There is, of course, also the Shattered Space expansion which we know very little about other than it should land in the latter half of 2024. Eventually, the focus will shift to The Elder Scrolls VI at which point development will speed up. Even still, it’s a game that’s years and years away from release.

Take a look at some of our favourite wins and fails from Starfield below.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Bethesda head Todd Howard did offer a brief tease of the project: “We want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy world simulator. And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed.” While I adore Starfield and feel it’s a far greater experience than most people give it credit for, I do agree that it’s in need of a few tweaks, so here’s to hoping that The Elder Scrolls VI learns from that - and that its NPCs are less dead behind the eyes.

The Elder Scrolls VI will use Starfield’s Creation Engine 2: “The technology, Creation Engine 2, is sort of built for both [Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI].” He added, “It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls VI as still being in a design [phase]… but we’re checking the tech: ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’ Every game will have some new suites of technology, so Elder Scrolls VI will have some additions on Creation Engine 2 that the game is going to require.”

He’s holding his cards close to his chest but it’s exciting to hear about The Elder Scrolls VI’s development nonetheless. For now, Bethesda fans will have to settle for the countdown to the reveal of the Shattered Space expansion.
