Elden Ring's DLC map is even bigger than we'd dared hope

Yesterday was a big day for Elden Ring fans after the premiere of the first Shadow of the Erdtree trailer was released. With the evening spent analysing every frame, it wasn’t long before players started speculating about the DLC’s size and scope.

After long last, FromSoftware’s first trailer for the much-anticipated Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree premiered yesterday and fans of the award-winning RPG were happy to say the least. The three-minute trailer gave us our first look at what we can expect from the new content which will reportedly feature “a brand new map separate from the Lands Between”.

This news comes courtesy of an interview with IGN and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki in which it soon became clear how ambitious this project was for the development team. So ambitious in fact that the Shadow of the Erdtree map is expected to be as big as the very first area in Elden Ring, Limgrave.

"It's hard to answer without giving away too much and to a high degree of accuracy, but if you think in terms of scale or size, it's probably comparable, if not larger, than the area of Limgrave from the base game," Miyazaki said.

Not only that but accessing this new map will be made possible through “a warp of sorts” which many fans believe is connected to Miquella themselves.

“Miquella is a key part of the story this time, perhaps as guessed by many players who saw the art that was released previously. That is in fact Miquella, and it is he who traveled to the Land of Shadow and it's the players who will be tracing his path and following in his footsteps, trying to see what he's going to do there,” Miyazaki continued.

With the promise of “open field maps, with large scale legacy dungeons, and with small to medium scale legacies”, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is expected to be FromSoftware’s “biggest DLC” yet when it releases on 21 June.
