In the run up to this edition of The Game Awards, a strange monolith appeared in the desert just Northwest of Joshua Tree in the United States.
It was a source of great mystery and speculation for the gaming community, who all sought to understand exactly what it was there for and what game it was meant to represent.
The final few days before the show itself saw a leak claim that it was actually there to promote the announcement of the new Divinity game from Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios.
That turned out to be very true, with the developer releasing a frankly pretty disturbing trailer for the new game, that featured everything from the immolation of a man to some pretty spectacular demonic magic and a lot of sex.

That left us with one big question though. Who were they setting fire to in the trailer and why were they doing it in the first place?
Now, it seems dedicated fans may have worked out exactly who it is and it could have some pretty major consequences for the game itself.

Lucian May Have Met a Grim End in the Flames
There will be some potential story spoilers for earlier Divinity games from here on out, so if you want to play through any of those first, then this might be the place to stop reading.
As first reported by IGN, the leading theory at the moment is that the man being burned to death is Lucian, one of the most important characters in the series to date.
He serves as the player character in the original game in the series, Divine Divinity, before he goes on to found The Divine Order, who appear heavily in Original Sin II.
He is worshipped as a deity, and he does have some divine powers, but if you managed to purge the Source in Original Sin II, then he is reinstalled as leader (only this time he secretly doesn't have any powers).
The theory therefore is that the people of Rivellon found out that he is weak and the gods are gone, leading them to put him in this situation as a punishment for his historical crimes.
It's a compelling theory, with features like the crown of thorns and his general appearance lining up well.
The tattoo on his chest also very closely resembles his staff, so that's another potential breadcrumb.
Whoever it is, they are having a pretty bad time, so expect them to be quite a significant figure from the game's lore.
