Divinity Officially Revealed by Larian, New RPG Bigger Than Baldur's Gate 3

Larian Studios is back

The Game Awards is now well underway, and the big announcements are rolling in all the time in between some very well deserved prizes being handed out.

The next on that list is confirmation that Divinity is on the way, marking the return of Larian Studios with a new game for the first time since the release of the always incredible Baldur's Gate 3.

Seemingly straying away from the Original Sin part of the nomenclature, it turns out that Divinity is the game behind that mysterious monolith that appeared in the desert near Joshua Tree a few weeks ago, which we now know is appropriately called the Hellstone.

The Game Awards also gave us our first trailer for the game, and oh boy if we don't have a lot to talk about.

It opens up on what seems like a nice, if slightly pagan, festival, with fire breathers, dancing and plenty of drinking. Things quickly change though, as a Wicker Man situation develops and a poor soul is set on fire, as it turns out members of the crowd are getting up to some stuff that's considerably ruder than just dancing.

As the man is consumed by flame, a dark force bursts forth from his body, sending the gathered crowds running in a bloody and brutal look at what the game is going to be like.

Like the previous games in the Original Sin portion of the series, this very much looks like the medieval fantasy world of Rivellon, and it looks like we're going to be dealing with all things demonic once again.

Being a cinematic trailer, we didn't get a look at anything in the gameplay department, but it would be quite the surprise if they strayed too far from the formula that's made them so successful up to this point.

The second game in the series released all the way back in 2017 to almost universal acclaim, revolutionising the turn-based tactical RPG genre at the time and leaving gamers wanting plenty more where that came from.

Fortunately, that's exactly what they're about to get, and Larian Studios will be hoping they can tap into the same level of positivity this time around.

With plenty of time still to go in the show, it's been an impressively strong start, particularly with the announcement of an unexpected new Star Wars game from the same director who brought us The Old Republic.
