Cyberpunk 2077's doomed second expansion leaves fans optimistic, and we get it

Take her to the moon for me

Cyberpunk 2077 fans have been left quietly optimistic by leaks surrounding the game's second major expansion.

These days Cyberpunk 2077 is regarded as one of the great modern RPGs, but a disastrous launch meant CD Projekt RED was forced to abandon a good deal of its original post-launch plans in favour of getting the game working properly.

The team succeeded, of course, and Cyberpunk 2077's acclaimed transformation was effectively completed with its first - and only - expansion, Phantom Liberty.

As great as Phantom Liberty is, fans are still hung up on what might have been - and I can't say I blame 'em.

A massive leak last year gave us images, concept art, blueprints, and file repositories all pointing to a second major expansion set on the moon.

In the world of Cyberpunk 2077, the moon has been colonised, with cities now on its surface and a population of 58,000 people.

As great as this sounds, it was ultimately scrapped for being too ambitious. But fans aren't letting that get them down, and are instead choosing to hope CDPR will consider bringing this idea back for the upcoming sequel.

"I hope they use some of the ideas like this that they were planning for the DLC for the sequel," one fan writes on Reddit.

Another points out: "Yep, it’s very likely the sequel will re-use Night City due to it being the main setting of the Cyberpunk world. So expanding the scope of the game to space is a smart move."

"Probably a good thing they canned it. I really couldn't see V going to the moon working out with the 'I'm literally days away from death' plot," a third argues - very hard to disagree with that one!

CDPR's next big game is of course The Witcher 4, so we'll be waiting a long while until we return to Night City and, if we're very lucky, finally get to travel to the stars.
