The latest official update for Cyberpunk 2077 seems to have doubled the frames-per-second for console users… well, uh… some console users, that is, because apparently the new feature straight up doesn’t work on a certain system.
Towards the end of last week, CD Projekt Red released the new Update 2.3 patch for Cyberpunk 2077.
The update featured a whole bunch of new content, including vehicles, quests, and even some new graphical settings.
One of the new additions in the patch is the inclusion of a variable refresh rate setting. If you’re unfamiliar with how it works, here’s the short version: the refresh rate of your screen will adjust automatically, which usually results in a much smoother experience and can also combat screen tearing.

In some cases, VRR also allows you to reach a higher framerate. Well, turns out that’s the case in Cyberpunk 2077– but only if you’re playing on a PlayStation 5 system.
That’s according to Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter, a man whose word you should take as gospel when it comes to stuff like this.
“On PlayStation consoles at least, this unlocks frame-rate on the 30fps RT mode, running to a maximum of 40 frames per second”, Leadbetter revealed in his report over on Eurogamer.
“Meanwhile, performance mode lifts the 60fps cap, allowing for frame-rates to potentially hit 120 frames per second.”

Some of you might be a little confused reading this, because the patch notes for Update 2.3 specifically state that VRR is available on Xbox systems. So, what’s the deal?
“On Series X, the lack of any difference to standard play does stick out - according to my LG CX OLED display, the console is outputting a VRR signal, but the refresh sticks to 118Hz - something that happens when VRR is not operating correctly”, Leadbetter continued.
“RT mode still runs at 30fps, performance mode at a capped 60fps - unless there's something specifically wrong with my set-up, Xbox VRR needs a fix.”
Huh. That’s… odd? To be fair, Leadbetter notes that, once it's properly implemented, VRR improvements on the Xbox Series X ”will be minor anyway”, but it’s still wild to me that it apparently just straight up doesn’t work at the moment.

I guess Xbox owners will have to wait for Update 2.3.1.
