Sony’s Spider-Man film universe is pretty much dead, but with the infinite potential of the multiverse it can live on in other formats.
The live-action projects like Venom and Kraven weren’t everyone’s cup of tea but the studio saw success with the Spider-Verse films. The new Spider-Man Noir series also looks quite good, but we’ll reserve judgement till we’ve seen it.
With the third instalment of the Spider-Verse trilogy on the way in addition to spin-offs following Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk it’s becoming increasingly clear that Sony is done with live-action for the most part.
But what’s this got to do with Venom? Well it means there’s a gap in the market when it comes to Spidey’s symbiotic arch-nemesis and Insomniac Games has just the thing for it, at least that’s what the leaks are saying.

Years ago when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launched it was said that a Venom spin-off akin to Spider-Man: Miles Morales was also in development.
At the time of writing Marvel’s The Wolverine is the next game on Insomniac’s release schedule which means Venom might be next, followed by Marvel's Spider-Man 3.

With Sony’s live-action Venom gone it’s the perfect time to bring the game forward too.
I don’t know many Spider-Man fans that don’t like Venom and his playable sections in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 were a lot of fun, we all want more of that I feel.
The only roadblock I can see is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The symbiote was teased to be in the MCU after Tom Hardy’s Venom was brought there by Doctor Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
A piece of the symbiote remained and we’re assuming it’ll have a role to play in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, after all the Secret Wars comic storyline is where Spidey canonically first acquires the symbiote suit.
As for Sony led projects though Venom doesn’t have much going on at the minute, so a new spin-off and maybe a return in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 feels like exactly what the big guy needs.
My hope is the spin-off will see Venom and Carnage clash.
Carnage has already been teased in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and it’d be weird to not make him the main villain.
I’m also hoping there’s a cameo boss fight with Wolverine, a nice callback to the Ultimate Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 2.
