Cyberpunk 2077 ends up in New York's Museum Of Failure

Two years after release, Cyberpunk 2077 has been admitted into the New York Museum of Failures, a harsh sentence, but not undeserved.

Nearly two years after its disastrous release, Cyberpunk 2077 has been admitted into the New York Museum of Failures, a harsh sentence, but not one that’s undeserved.

Even if you weren’t interested in CD Projekt Red’s monumental release, you’d have seen it advertised and talked about online prior to its release. Even more so when it eventually did come out, along with an avalanche of bugs and performance issues that deeply angered fans who’d waited years for the dystopian FPS role-playing game.

It’s not the first, and probably not the last, game to be battered by post-launch problems. In fact, many gamers are now calling for playable demos of new games, to avoid wasting money on unfinished or buggy products.

Even the beloved Keanu Reeves couldn’t save the game from painfully average critic reviews, and user scores, and while the game itself was actually pretty good, it just didn’t live up to the hype it amassed following the years of development, teasers, and delays it faced before finally arriving to everyone’s platforms. The game was even recalled and refunded by the developers due to it’s incredibly poor performance, which often made the game unplayable on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Years later, Cyberpunk 2077 is in a much better state than it once was, with several post-game updates bringing numerous fixes, bonus content, and quality of life improvements, as well as some expansion DLC on the way. But gamers haven’t forgotten the title’s transgressions, and the catastrophic launch has also been recognised by the New York Museum of Failure.

Reddit user p4ul1023 shared an image of a new plaque at the museum, dedicated to Cyberpunk 2077, outlining how the “massive hype led to massive disappointment”, listing some of the bugs and glitches that plagued the game’s launch.

Luckily, fans haven’t let the rough start dissuade them from enjoying everything Night City has to offer, with one commenter saying: “Coming from somebody that didn’t play it until 2023…. When I finally got hold of it, it blew my mind. I wish I had played it sooner. But I’m also glad I missed all the bugs at launch lol.

“The game is a huge win for me.”

Admittedly, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t a bad game by any means, and surviving a broken launch and tonnes of negative press is no small feat. Luckily, CD Projekt Red is still dedicated to improving the title which took a decade to see the light of day, with upcoming expansions and more patch updates. However, gamers will never forget the harrowing events of the game’s launch, with it being cemented as a reminder to all developers, of the cost of rushing out an unfinished project.
