Call of Duty’s 2027 game will apparently take the series in a completely different direction, which is arguably what the franchise needs right now.
As it stands Call of Duty is in trouble, because despite it doing well on the charts reviews from both fans and critics have been scathing to say the least.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was the last straw for many as while facing fears can often be an interesting story element it was executed quite poorly in Black Ops 7’s campaign.
In 2027 it’ll be Sledgehammer's turn once again to produce a Call of Duty game, and like previous games it’ll apparently attempt yet another spin-off.

I use the term spin-off loosely there, as what I actually mean is something unrelated to the core Call of Duty series, like Black Ops and Modern Warfare.
Starring a new cast of characters it’s said to be set somewhere in the late 1990s to early 2000s, and while it’s still in early development some of its core mechanics have leaked ahead of time.
TheGhostOfHope recently reported that the unannounced Call of Duty game will feature; “Omnimovement with NO Tac Sprint is currently planned for the game, Pick 10 returning is a big discussion happening, Zombies currently still not planned to return, Get High returns (Still unclear if its the third mode).”

Whether the above is good or bad will come down to personal preference of course but speaking as a very, very casual fan of the series I find it hard to believe that Zombies won’t be featured. It feels like such a mainstay and while it’s not as good now as it once was you’d expect it to be included regardless.
That said perhaps this is the kind of shake-up Call of Duty needs to get back on its feet, as the last few games have felt a little too safe and formulaic, which is probably why they’ve all landed so poorly amongst fans.
When you look at games like Battlefield 6 that have a very clear understanding of what identity it wants to possess it’s easy to view modern Call of Duty games as lesser, as they feel all over the place in terms of what they want to be.
One of the biggest issues though is development time. Call of Duty games clearly need more time to cook with the perfect example of why being Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), which really benefited from more time in the oven.
