Last year was a difficult one for the long-running Call of Duty franchise.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 didn’t exactly fare very well on Metacritic, scoring a mixed 65.
I was in attendance at last year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live and the reaction to the game’s reveal segment in the show was underwhelming to say the least.
The lack of reaction and rapturous applause was the writing on the wall for Black Ops 7, and it didn’t help that Battlefield had such a stellar year with Battlefield 6 marking a major comeback.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 isn’t to be thrown on the scrap heap though. Developer Treyarch Studios is working hard to regain fans’ trust.

One way it’s doing that is by bringing back a fan-favourite mode that hasn’t been seen in eight years, having originally debuted 11 years ago.
Welcome Back Safeguard, Old Friend
Treyarch has confirmed that Safeguard is officially set to return, having last been seen in 2018’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
It was in 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 though that the mode debuted.
if you’re unfamiliar, Safeguard essentially tasks an attacking team with escorting a robot to a destination, and earning points for doing so.
There’s then a defending team which must do what it can to stop that from happening by firing at both the attacking team and the robot, making their journey across the map that much more difficult.
Good news for fans, ot’s set to return in both Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone from Thursday 5 February which is when the latest seasonal update drops.
Full patch notes for the update aren’t yet available, but one thing I do know. It’s a classic formula, and one that is very fun to play.
Of course, we don’t know yet if Treyarch will have tweaked it in any way.
“It’s back,” is simply all the studio has said via Twitter/X, attaching an accompanying teaser image.
The general consensus appears to be that players will be transporting Black Ops 7’s D.A.W.G this time around.

I have to say, the response seems very positive to this latest move.
“Here we go again. Buckle up,” replied one player.
“SAFEGUARD MY BELOVED,” added another.
“Holy aura,” one comment read.
Well, 5 February isn’t all that far away, so Safeguard will be ours before we know it.
