Next Battlefield Game Is An "Overwatch-Style" Shooter, Says Insider

Next Battlefield Game Is An "Overwatch-Style" Shooter, Says Insider

"EA seems determined to do everything in their power to strip away the core of Battlefield," complained one player.

The next step in the Battlefield series is to take some inspiration from hero shooters like Overwatch and Valorant, says notorious industry insider Tom Henderson.

That claim might sound a little out of left field given how these two types of shooters are like chalk and cheese, however, Henderson has been on the money regarding hints and tips about Battlefield 2042 before its launch. He accurately stated that there would be a futuristic setting, the presence of natural disasters that affect the surroundings over the course of the game, and the immense level of destructible environments. Yet, he was not correct about the "revolutionary campaign" because Battlefield 2042 doesn't have one. Ergo, when he says something, we tend to take stock in it given the reliable track record he has.

So, to sum up, Battlefield 2042 wasn't the earth-shattering experience that was touted by developer DICE and publisher EA. Petoons Studio's My Friend Peppa Pig actually has a higher user score than Battlefield, the new remasters of the Grand Theft Auto games, and Call of Duty: Vanguard all put together. That certainly wasn't on my 2021 bingo card. In order to rectify the disappointment that fans have felt about Battlefield 2042, the team looks to be reconceptualising what Battlefield is. It's not a bad idea, really, but players are already airing their concerns over how different this new game could be.

"The next Battlefield title is scoped as a hero shooter of sorts - It's not a removal of specialists, but an enhancement of them," said Henderson on Twitter. "Battlefield 2042 has always been intended to be a stepping stone to a "hero shooter" with a Battle Royale - It was just executed poorly." That last sentence is one heck of a claim. Hero shooters often use cartoony styles which is entirely other to the high realism of Battlefield. Furthermore, these games attract different audiences, and that's not a negative thing. It's just something to bear in mind when you consider the community that the series has built up over the years.

"EA seems determined to do everything in their power to strip away the core of Battlefield with each release," argued one player on Reddit. "I’m genuinely wondering if Apex Legends has been having an influence," mused another. "The hero shooters / specialists, the marvel quips in both games, the rumour that 2042 originally started as a battle royale." Apex Legends is EA's golden goose so this isn't too much of a stretch. However, we will have to wait and see whether or not Henderson is correct again.
