Despite the recent perception of the Battlefield series following 2042, it’s still a beloved military shooter that once stood firmly alongside Call of Duty.

One of the most popular entries in the series is Battlefield 1942 which is, in fact, the first game in the long-running franchise. In celebration of its 21st birthday with its release arriving in September 2002, fans have been looking back fondly on the game that started it all.

“Battlefield 1942 was released exactly 21 years ago, it was my first BF game,” exclaimed jperaic1, who kicked off the discussion on the Reddit thread.

Fellow Redditors shared enthusiasm for the Battlefield of yesteryear, which no doubt came with a hint of sadness, remembering the series that it once was. “My first Battlefield too. The Coral Sea and Omaha were some of my favourites,” replied kumikanki.

“Man, I loved the flying in that game. I bought a joystick just for that. No other game comes close,” rejoiced demerdar. “It was such a banger. Flying the B-17 bomber or trying to torpedo the aircraft carrier, or waiting in ambush laying mines/explosives on an important road. Such good times,” said a nostalgic PresidentHurg.

“Amazing game. Playing co-op LAN at a local store where everyone was joined on the same server was so good!” said DrakandPB. “THE best Battlefield in terms of pure online fun,” added Lenadr.

If you want to relive the magic that was Battlefield 1942 or see what all the fuss is about, then you’re in luck. Thanks to devoted fans, Battlefield 1942 has received a stunning remaster that is most certainly worth checking out. Elsewhere, EA has seemingly teased the next Battlefield, but fans aren't convinced.

Battlefield 1942 is out now on PC.
