Baldur's Gate 3 'true' third-person mod makes it feel like a whole new game

Sometimes its best to take a step back and look at things from a different point of view.

Not that we really need reminding Baldur's Gate 3 is the GOAT, those ever-loyal modders have just given us a brand-new reason to play. So, pick up your sword, roll the dice, and let's head back into the Forgotten Realms to remember how Larian Studios knocked it out of the park in 2023.

Whether it be installing 'Party Limits Begone' to boost your squad from an intimate four players to a beefy 16, '5e Spells' to reintroduce dozens of spells from the official Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition tabletop ruleset, or 'Hug Your Companions' to overhaul romancing, Baldur's Gate 3 is much like Fallout: New Vegas in 2026. If you aren't playing it with mods, are you playing it right at all?

True Third-Person Camera takes us to a whole new world

Even Larian has realised the power of Baldur's Gate 3 mods, adding support for console players back in 2024. We recently covered how modders created the new Astarion ending that feels like it's been plucked straight out of the Twilight saga, but now, Nexus Mods holds the keys to a very different kind of kingdom, courtesy of Relysia's True Third-Person Camera mod.

Instead of the typical top-down isometric camera viewpoint, Relysia's mod gives some serious Dragon Age: Origins vibes.

Expanding on the Native Camera Tweaks by Ersh, True Third-Person Camera keeps all of those features but adds a dedicated toggle to switch to an over-the-shoulder third-person camera view. Think Baldur's Gate 3 meets Resident Evil 4.

Radically transforming how we navigate and even view the world when compared to the default settings, we get up close and personal with our characters.

Then again, after we spent so much time carefully designing them, why wouldn't you want to see them in all their glory?

Also, while the traditional camera view often gets stuck in tight spaces and is forced to clip through walls, the mod's dynamic height adjustments make things a lot smoother.

Working with WASD movement controls, the whole hassle of point and click also evolves into something very different.

The instructions note you'll need Baldur's Gate 3 Script Extender (BG3SE) and Mod Configuration Menu (MCM) because features like automatically detecting Turn-Based Mode and the in-game MCM settings menu rely on BG3SE's scripting.

Making things a little easier, the mod is now a single package.

Baldur's Gate 4 could benefit from a third-person view

As more modern games, including The Witcher 3, go for a similar look, it feels like a revamped version of the classic D&D formula, although we're sure some naysayers will argue it's robbed the game of its charm.

That's the great thing about this mod though: no one is forcing you to play it.

Importantly, this could be an option for the upcoming Baldur's Gate 4, which sadly won't have Larian back at the helm.

While it's true that third-person mods aren't exactly new to Baldur's Gate 3, Relysia's is the best we've seen on offer. There are Reddit threads galore where players have begged for third-person camera options, and as Hasbro searches for a new developer to take the lead on Baldur's Gate 4, the lucky team is probably out there and watching for feedback.

We're not here to argue that Baldur's Gate 4 should be a wholly third-person experience, but like Resident Evil Requiem allowed you to switch between first and third-person perspectives, it would be a unique perk for Baldur's Gate to try something similar.

Players will just have to add it to the long list of things they want to see from Baldur's Gate 4's eventual release.
