Baldur's Gate 3 Cut Content is Coming, Like a Brand New Game

Technically, it might be better to say it's like a brand new old game, I guess?

This upcoming cut-content-focused restoration for Baldur’s Gate 3 is promising big things, including 1,000 extra voice lines, more encounters and even additional cutscenes.

If you weren’t lucky enough to play Baldur’s Gate 3 before its official 1.0 release in 2023, then there’s an entire boatload of content you missed out on that is no longer accessible.

It’s hard to explain exactly how different the game was in Early Access, because while the core gameplay and story remain mostly the same today, so many little things were altered or outright removed by Larian Studios that it felt like a completely different game from the one we have today.

Scenes and extra pieces of dialogue were either removed or replaced, weapons and armour pieces (that can still be found in the game’s files) were rendered inaccessible, and even certain characters were completely overhauled.

Take Wyll, for instance. In the game we have now, he's a swashbuckling, cool-headed hero with a heart of gold, but that wasn't the case in early access.

Instead, he was a bit more on the Chaotic Good side of things and even had an alternative backstory that was decidedly anti-goblin (including a separate story for how he originally lost his eye). He even had an entirely different voice actor!

Unfortunately, your opportunity to experience all of this first-hand has since passed… officially, at least.

That’s because a modder by the name of HyperspaceTowel is attempting to add all of this old content back to the game, in a mod they're referring to as Early Access Scenes Restored.

The mod was announced earlier last month alongside a teaser trailer featuring some of the upcoming re-additions, and the community latched onto it immediately.

And now, HyperspaceTowel is back again with a new update, and it sounds like they’ve been very, very busy.

According to them, they've managed to add "over 120 dialogues" and "over 1000 voiced lines" that were removed from Act 1 back into the game, including an early thrall-based encounter that was supposed to serve as a mini-tutorial at the start of the game.

So, when will it be ready? That depends entirely on which platform you intend to play it on.

If you’re on PC, HyperspaceTowel is aiming for release by the “end of the year”, after the next round of testing is complete.

Otherwise, you’re going to have to wait a little while longer. Work on console ports for the mod are only going to start once the PC version is complete– and that’s only if the mod even gets approved for release on console.
