Baldur’s Gate 3 is already promising to be a strong contender for Game of the Year, but there’s one accolade that may fall short of its grasp.

Developed and published by Larian Studios, I think it’s fair to say that most would not have expected success quite to the level that Baldur’s Gate 3 has currently achieved. Since its launch on PC on 3 August 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 has become the 10th highest-rated video game on Metacritic. However, since the time of writing that article, it has now climbed to 8th. What’s more, it is also currently the highest-rated video game on PC, ever!

Yet, despite all its early accolades, Baldur’s Gate 3 has failed to claim Hogwarts Legacy’s concurrent player record on the Steam platform. That being said, I have a feeling that could change in the coming weeks/months.

According to SteamDB, at the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 has an all-time concurrent player record of 875, 343. That falls just short of the Hogwarts Legacy record of 879,308. As of right now, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy are ranked eighth and ninth in the ‘Most Played’ games on Steam.

Though despite the success of both Hogwarts Legacy and Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023, it's very unlikely that both will ever come near to claim the all-time concurrent player record. As of right now, that record belongs to PUBG with a whopping 3,257,248. In second and third place is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Lost Ark with 1,818,773 and 1,325,305, respectively.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is out now on PC and arrives on PlayStation 5 on 6 September, which just so happens to be the same release date as Bethesda’s Starfield. Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox Series X|S at some point, but due to the technical limitations of the Series S, the Xbox version has been delayed with no set release date.

It is expected that Baldur’s Gate 3 will arrive sometime in early 2024 for Xbox Series X|S.
