Extraction shooters really are all the rage right now. ARC Raiders seems to be taking the world by storm, hitting a peak of almost half a million simultaneous players on Steam since launching at the end of October, and consistently holding strong to that level at the time of writing.
That said, there are other games coming up that could easily affect the popularity of ARC Raiders, and they might even take the crown that’s perched so precariously on its head right now.
One of those is Exoborne, an open-world, tactical extraction shooter where the game’s setting has been devastated by extreme forces of nature. Though the fundamentals remain true to the genre, it’s a game that comes with a ton of highly unique features that you genuinely won’t see anywhere else.
The big thing you’ll have to contend with is the dynamic weather system, where tornadoes, lightning strikes, apocalyptic storms and other hazards could all occur. This will act as the major source of variability between rounds, with the developer promising that no two games will be the same. It turns out that there’s plenty more to like beyond that, and it’s definitely one to keep an eye on, even if you don’t usually appreciate the genre.
Exoborne Has All The Chops To Convert Even The Most Sceptical Gamer

GAMINGBible’s own Kate Harrold previewed the game as part of Gamescom 2024, and it’s safe to say that she was impressed, even as someone who usually steers well clear of the genre.
“Exoborne surprised me to no end. I’d have never put myself down as an extraction shooter player, and all Exoborne has done is highlight my own ignorance. The freedom that comes with playing a character empowered by the exo rig is extremely welcomed given the environmental and time constraint challenges that players will need to face, but I find myself yearning to take these challenges on,” GAMINGBible’s preview reads.
“The ever-changing ecosystem feels like it has limitless potential, leading to matches that are unpredictable and therefore constantly entertaining. The premium live-service market may be shaky, but I’m confident that Exoborne will come out on top.”
With that kind of ability to turn opinion, it's a reasonably safe bet that those who are already into the genre will like what it has to offer. Though it doesn't have an official release date just yet, rumours continue to swirl that it may arrive in the early throes of 2026, so fingers crossed we don't have too long to wait.
