It just wouldn't be The Lord Of The Rings without an army of crusty orcs chasing the heroes across Middle Earth, and so it is that Amazon has finally revealed what the monsters will look like in the upcoming The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power.

Part of the reason Peter Jackon's original The Lord Of The Rings trilogy was so beloved is because the director insisted on using practical effects and prosthetics to brings the orcs to life. If you go back and watch those movies today, you'll see how great (or rather, terrifying) they still look.

The ill-fated Hobbit trilogy then made the switch to CGI effects for most of the monsters, and the difference has always rubbed fans up the wrong way. Naturally, Tolkien stans everywhere have been desperate to know which route Amazon would be taking.

As reported by IGN as part of an exclusive orc reveal (an orcsclusive?), The Rings Of Power will favour practical effects for its orcs, with CGI only being used when the show needs to establish a large number of them at any one time.

"When they are up close to the camera, Orcs are really practical and almost exclusively," explained the show's executive producer Lindsey Weber.

"And the places where the visual effects team help were in more numbers when we need larger quantities than you could amass on a film set anywhere in the world. That's what they sort of, when they come in and do some of, work their magic. We did a lot of planning so that we knew in advance which performers would be closest to camera."

You can take a look at these brand-new orcs below!

Weber also revealed that The Rings Of Power will give us female orcs for the first time ever, which sounds like a pretty interesting inclusion. We'll find out exactly how they factor into the show when The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut on September 2, 2022.
