Six years have passed since Red Dead Redemption 2 first launched, yet it remains one of the very finest out there for graphics, storytelling, and feeling like you’re playing in a living, breathing world. There aren’t too many Western-inspired video games, but developers Rockstar set a very high bar for any subsequent competition.

If you’ve never experienced this epic cowboy tale, or you’re keen to relive Arthur Morgan’s journey through an American West that’s civilising itself away from the era of bandits and outlaws, now’s the time to pounce. Right now you can grab the digital version for just £18.14 down from £54.99 on both the Playstation Store and Xbox Store respectively.

Set in a series of fictional American states in 1899, the game follows the Dutch Van Der Linde gang as they evade the Pinkerton Detective Agency whilst raising hell and looking for somewhere to continue their lifestyle in a world evolving beyond it. It’s a high-stakes and tragic tale that’s sold by extremely well-drawn characters, intimate and organic dialogue, and compelling themes that can make you pine for an era you never lived in.

Playing as Dutch’s right-hand-man, Arthur, you have a whole open world to explore complete with plains, forests, swamps, saloon-focused towns, early-modern American cities, desert, and more. Along with following the lengthy campaign, you’ll have free rein to go hunting, track down bounties, conduct robberies, take on rival gangs, commandeer trains, and much, much more.

On the Playstation Store it’s got a rating of 4.73 out of 5, and on Metacritic both the Xbox and Playstation editions have a 97 out of 100 score. That makes it one of the best games of all time in terms of average review scores. On Playstation, it will be compatible with both the PS4 and PS5, and on Xbox it will run on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

“The game constantly challenges your sense of what's right and wrong,” said a five-star Amazon review. “Many kudos to the the writers, and there certainly were a gaggle of them. This is truly a masterpiece.”

“Highly recommend for any avid gamer out there,” said another review awarding top marks. “Especially recommend for those fond of the Wild West setting or just a fan of Rockstar or Red Dead Redemption.” Another added: “Probably the masterpiece of the decade. The game is so intense and immersive and there is so much to do!”

However, others have found the game’s slow pacing to be outside their tastes: “I'll probably keep playing, but unlike other games where I find myself putting hours and hours into it, it's all too easy to put this game down and do something else.” Another added: "Like some of the other recent reviewers I have to categorise this game as almost impossibly boring."

If high fantasy is more your speed, the new Dragon Age: Veilguard for £54.99 at Currys is very highly-rated and available on both PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Or if you want a dose of nostalgia instead, the new Sonic X Shadow Generations on Nintendo Switch has also received excellent reviews and is only £34 at Game.

But for a taste of the outlaw life, with all its thrills, spills, and everything in-between, Red Dead Redemption 2 is your best bet - but you'll have to act quick, before the deal disappears.
