GTA 6 playthrough time: Price tag justified by staggering gameplay length

Rockstar has dropped it's Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look over on Netflix and boy, does it look like the hype is real.

And the release of the 27-minute gameplay and cut scene footage has come hand in hand with a bunch of extra insights from across the gaming world after Rockstar gave a select number of creators and publishers access to all things GTA 6.

During this process attention turned to just how long it will take to complete the game. And you are not prepared.

We're talking 80 hours. That's just for the campaign alone and minor outside chaos and destruction, never mind getting immersed in a world that will have a map three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Tip of the hat to the New York Times for that scoop, with Rockstar North's Rob Nelson telling the outlet that he spent a solid eighty on his own playthrough back in February.

Nelson's time playing GTA 6 was the main storyline and 'some optional goals with narrative ramifications', which we are going to assume means a little bit of playing God and causing chaos in the open-world setting we've grown to love ever since GTA 3.

To put it simply, GTA 6 will blow its predecessors out of the water.

Back when both GTA 4 and GTA 5 were released, there were standard playthrough times of around 30 hours.

To compare to Rockstar's greatest game (so far) in Red Dead Redemption 2, that campaign had us playing the tragic story of John Marston for 60 hours.

And even after those 60 hours playing RDR2, there was still a truck load of new and exciting things to do and discover, such as hunting legendary animals and fish, take out bounty targets, and what felt like countless side quests (I'm still not sure I got them all even after spending 100-plus hours on it).

With 80 hours being roughly three and a third days of your life, it's safe to say things could get very intense should you commit to the bit and really aim for that 100% completion of the game.

Given that we're seeing the return of gyms, something not seen since the glory days of San Andreas, the time spent playing the life of the character is bound to see your 80 hours balloon without even realise it.

Add in a bunch of mini games including car and dirt bike racing, scuba diving, backyard wrestling, and skydiving, you wouldn't be blamed for forgetting to progress the storyline as quickly as you might with another open-world adventure.
