Red Dead Redemption 2 has just landed its own version of the Nemesis system, thanks to a new mod which makes the world feel much more alive.
Fans of the Nemesis system from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will know just how much potential the mechanic has for enriching open-world games.
Although the system remains patented by Warner Bros. until 2036, preventing game companies from adding the system to their own releases, modders have taken things into their own hands.
enRAGE is a new mod which fleshes out the living world of Red Dead Redemption 2, adding a Nemesis system to the various gangs and outlaws that populate the game's story mode.

Similar to the Middle-earth games, every person you cross in the West can become a nemesis. If you rob someone, beat them, or insult them, they may come back for you with a grudge.
How does enRAGE's Nemesis System work in Red Dead Redemption 2?
While playing story mode, greet any stranger and you'll learn their name. From that point on, they are a persistent character in your world. They're given traits, quirks, a trade, a faith, a family and a life story which you can learn. They're also given a temper which affects their behaviour. For example, a Hothead may be quick to anger, whilst a Coward will back down from fights pretty easily, or may even avoid them altogether.
Each of these strangers are given a score which the mod tracks. Performing negative actions against them, such as insulting them, robbing them, or killing their friends, will increase this score. Hate grows, and so do the strength of their weapons.
This is where the Nemesis system comes into play. Split between eight factions (based on various gangs from the story mode, like the O'Driscoll Boys, the Bronte Family, and the Lemoyne Raiders), each one has a leader, officers, and men who rise, fall, and get replaced. They each have their own agenda, whether that's land, money, or revenge. Killing a nemesis will replace them in the hierarchy, giving you a constant stream of bad guys to take care of.
The mod also includes an interrogation system which you can use to learn more about certain nemeses or factions. Take one guy alive and question him, and you'll uncover more information about the gang you're after, including where the leader is located.
What's most important here is that each character featured in enRAGE's Nemesis system has their own habits and routines. Figure out where a mob boss likes to drink, and you can wait for him in the saloon. The next day, his friends will bury him, giving you an opportunity to continue to killing spree. The mod essentially makes the world feel much more alive, as if the world goes on whether you are watching or not.
If you'd like to give it a shot, you can download enRAGE now for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 via Nexus Mods.
