The Wild West world of Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 just got a whole lot more immersive thanks to this free, Westworld-inspired mod, making the classic feel a little closer to GTA 6.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is already one of the most immersive video games of all time, with its open-world setting a high bar for GTA VI's new version of Vice City.
However, there's always room for improvement, and the modding community has us covered with loads of the best Red Dead Redemption 2 mods. And this free, work-in-progress Westworld RDR2 mod, inspired by the HBO series Westworld and Michael Crichton's 1973 sci-fi film of the same name, is the latest example.
How the RDR2 mod makes NPCs more like those in GTA 6
The mod was created by gadinhodms94. The Westworld RDR2 mod that gives NPCs a brain is available to download now for free via Nexus Mods. But this impressive mod does a lot more than you might think, and we'll take you through just some of its best features.
Best features of the Westworld-inspired RDR2 mod

- Talk to NPCs using your own voice: Speak into your microphone, and NPCs will respond in character, with subtitles displaying their answers.
- NPCs have their own personalities: Characters can react differently to situations, whether that means becoming frightened, refusing to help, lying or starting a fight.
- NPCs remember your actions: Characters can recall previous conversations and whether you've helped, threatened, robbed or given them something.
- Recruit your own companions: Convince up to three NPCs to join you and fight alongside you.
- Companions interact with the world: Your followers can chat with each other and react to the weather, your injuries and other events.
- Give companions orders: Ask them to follow you, wait, mount a horse, provide cover during a fight or attack a target.
- Discover missions through rumours: Ask NPCs about local rumours or work to generate missions involving rescues, bandit camps, hidden stashes and revenge.
- Build relationships with companions: Treat a companion badly for long enough, and they may leave, potentially taking some of your money or items with them.
- Bring your camp to life: Companions can sit by the campfire, cook, play guitar, smoke, drink and talk about the day's events.
- Dead companions can return: In a nod to Westworld, a dead companion can reappear in another town after a couple of in-game days, remembering you but with a reduced relationship level.
It's worth mentioning that this mod is currently a work in progress, so expect some bugs until its creator fixes them.
Is Red Dead Redemption 3 finally getting an update?
Sadly not. Rockstar Games hasn't announced anything regarding the release of Red Dead Redemption 3. The best we can hope for right now is that RDR3 might start pre-production once GTA VI is released on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. After all, RDR2 did start development after the GTA V launch. So you never know.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It's also backwards compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
