According to certain sources, news has emerged that GTA VI saw several major changes to its story over development, leading to a few cancellations and rewrites.
Of course, every game goes through iterations while in development, but it’s been said that internal discussions revolved around the story for GTA VI being “too dark.”
Rockstar Games are known for pushing the boundaries in many ways, including narratively, and it would be no surprise to see the studio wanting to touch on the darker topics of modern life.
Gamers over on Reddit aren’t so sure about this nugget of news, with one fan creating a thread titled simply, “Surely nobody actually believes this?”

“I don’t believe any rumours regarding this game. And this is something that Rockstar never confirmed,” said SeamShiftedWake.
That’s a fair stance to take. So much of the development for GTA VI has been under wraps for years, and even after the two trailers, not much is known about the story.
Another Redditor comments, “It wouldn’t surprise me if there were many, many drafts. Same as every other game. But cancelled 3 times, I call BS on that.”
For a game in a franchise known to test the limits, it’s no surprise that Rockstar Games would try something daring, but one has to think that they’ve earned the right to try something a little darker than normal.

It’s also unlikely that it would get canned unless something incredibly controversial was included.
Hovscorpion puts it well, saying, “Do I believe the story of GTA VI has undergone re-writes, of course. Everything does. Whether it's a book, a movie, a game. The first iteration is never the final draft. Do I believe the specifics of the re-write based on the screenshot, no.”
Fans aren’t convinced, and we’ll never really know the specifics, but it’s certain to be a hell of a ride on release next year.
