There are so many games releasing all the time that it can be tough to pick out the true gems that look like they could really do something exciting within their genre or space.
To make life a little easier, it helps to look for features from games that we know work well to see if new releases that have chosen to replicate them in some way, do so competently.
Upcoming release Covenant has that in spades, combining elements from classics like Skyrim and Bloodborne to create a pretty original offering that looks like it could be pretty exciting when it drops on Steam.
Played entirely in first-person, Covenant features all of the magic and weapon types that you'd expect from a fantasy game, with tough enemies lying in wait around every corner.

The big feature that sets it apart is the movement system, which is crucial to not only getting through the game, but how you play whilst doing so.
The close quarters combat is heavily based on where you are attacking from or the angle you're facing enemies. To create gaps and open them up to attacks, you'll need to move around your foes and can do this by running along walls, kicking rolling and side-stepping.
The cool thing about the system is that it rewards the time you put into it. It's easy to get a basic approach to dodging going, but to truly obliterate everything you'll need to become a master of chaining complex movements together.
That skill-based gameplay should be very rewarding to play, and there is further depth thanks to the Stance system, which changes your character's fighting style entirely.

Covenant also has buildcrafting on top of all that, so it could be a release to really keep an eye on in the coming months, with a release date yet to be confirmed by the developer.
