Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless Headset review: A Call of Duty essential

It’s no secret that the Call of Duty series has a massive and devoted fan base, always eager to welcome everything that the series has to offer with open arms.

Its most recent entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, has received positive reviews across the board and what better way is there for fans to celebrate than by picking up the latest officially licensed accessory, the HS80 RGB Wireless Gaming Headset from Corsair?

Check out the HS80 RGB Wireless Headset trailer below!

Designed for PC, PlayStation, and mobile, the HS80 Black Ops 6 Edition not only looks the part with its sleek black design and official artwork on each ear cup, but it also helps to give you an advantage when gaming online. That being said, it won't compensate for lack of skill, so don't expect this headset to be an instant game changer.

Other than its subtle but stylish design, when being used on PC, all models of the HS80 come equipped with 50mm neodymium audio drivers that deliver super crisp Dolby Atmos. The Dolby Atmos technology takes surround sound to the next level and not only will you hear every gunshot and explosion with crystal clear clarity, but if you’re observant, you should be able to hear the tippy-toes of enemies creeping up behind you.

Likewise, it also helps identify the direction of nearby gunfire so that you can get out of dodge before the proverbial poop hits the fan. Don’t get me wrong, this won't save you every time, but it’s otherwise an advantage that you might not have when using a lesser headset. That being said, you will need to download the free Dolby Access App to use Atmos and once connected with the wireless dongle provided in the box, you’re good to go.

Sadly, Dolby Atmos is only available when using the headset on a PC and is not compatible with PlayStation 5. Thankfully, the PS5 has 3D Audio, a worthy equivalent to Dolby Atmos, that’s compatible with all headsets, so you won't miss out in that respect.

Corsair says that this headset can last up to 20 hours before needing a recharge. That can depend on your volume settings and I would say that I got at least 15 hours before my OCD compelled me to plug in the headset for some much-needed juice.

The HS80 RGB Wireless Gaming Headset is very comfortable to wear and after using it for roughly two-hours at a time, I never encountered the weird sensation of my ears feeling warm, something that I’ve had with other headsets. This could be due to the larger cup size and its comfortable memory foam cushions with breathable cloth.

The only criticism that I have with the headset, which is more of a personal preference, is that I’m not a fan of the adjustable band that is secured and lengthened by velcro rather than adjusting the ear cup via a slider. I feel a slider is quicker and easier to adjust on the fly.

Furthermore, this is exclusively a wireless headset and does not feature an audio jack. Having a wired option is always welcome but being purely wireless is a sign of the current times.

At £149.99, the Black Ops 6 Edition doesn't come cheap but it’s a standard price for a headset of its quality. I firmly believe that when it comes to audio, you pay for what you get and if you decide to pick up the HS80 RGB Wireless Gaming Headset, especially as a Call of Duty fan, it’s a purchase you won't regret.
