The first trailer for Zach Creggar's Resident Evil movie has just been dropped by Sony, giving us a first look at the upcoming horror movie.
Resident Evil as a franchise has had some poor luck in the past with regards to its film adaptations, with most pictures being universally panned by critics and fans.
However, high hopes are riding on this project thanks to the historical success of Creggar's previous films, Barbarian and Weapons.
Sony Pictures has now released a first trailer for the movie, giving us around two minutes of footage to digest, embedded below.
It will release in cinemas on 18 September, 2026.
The trailer shows a man, seemingly lost in the middle of nowhere, who happens upon a strange house and asks to use the phone.

The man is then shown running away from an unseen danger, seeking refuge in a barn and find a shotgun for protection, before cutting to same man now in a city.
We then see more shots of some of the horrors the man faces, including a large monster hiding in a sewer, a creature with contorted limbs, and what also appears to be multiple instances of zombies attacking him.
Resident Evil stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser.
"From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise," reads the film description. "In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos."

It appears that the characters in the film won't be based on established characters from the Resident Evil games, but rather original creations that will only appear in the film. It's unclear yet what kind of connections there are to the games, but we assume more will become clear when the film releases.
So, I wouldn't expect Chris Redfield to show up punching a boulder or anything like that. But perhaps we'll get a few nods towards the Umbrella Corporation, or Albert Wesker might make a cameo.
Still, even though it doesn't necessarily look like Resident Evil, you can't argue that that's necessarily a bad thing.
The Resi style doesn't always necessarily translate well to film, so it's clear that a bold and new take is needed to correct the course.
