Resident Evil players have spotted an iconic Easter egg in Zach Cregger’s first trailer for the latest adaptation of the survival horror series.
Yesterday, the highly anticipated first trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil dropped, and while it never gave me obvious vibes of the legendary Capcom survival horror series, it at the very least looked like a promising horror movie. However, fans have spotted at least one deliberately planted Easter egg.
If you had no idea this was a Resident Evil adaptation, but were especially a fan of Zach Creggar, there’s a good chance that the debut trailer would have gotten you massively hyped. After all, it's from the same director who brought us Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025), two excellent horror flicks.
In the trailer, it had all the tension and quirkiness that you might expect from a Zach Creggar horror movie. However, it didn't seem much like a Resident Evil product, in my opinion. Perhaps that perspective might change when we watch the movie.

That being said, this is a standalone non-canon story that takes place in Raccoon City, and Creggar has said that he likes to think the movie takes place in the same timeline as Resident Evil 2. Yet, while there were no obvious references to that game, there was an interesting prop in the background featuring its lead character, Bryan, played by Austin Abrams.
Yes, that’s right, eagle-eyed Resident Evil fans have spotted the iconic green herb, an item in the series used for healing by the lead playable characters. More specifically, this looks just like the green herb from the games post 2019.
“Green Herb in the movie trailer, even has the bucket with the yellow stripe,” said Redditor Mariosonicpac, sharing a still from the new trailer. “We'd better see a typewriter at some point, too.”
To be fair, given that the latest attempt at getting a live-action Resident Evil movie right is potentially set in 1998, there’s probably a good chance that we might see a typewriter of some kind.
“Totally a Resident Evil movie now,” replied victoriamikoto231.
“Good catch,” replied hik3guy. “When he checked the shotgun for ammo, and it was empty, I said to myself, 'typical Resident Evil’.”
“I'm gonna need yellow paint in this movie so I know where to look on screen,” joked DonkeyComfortable711, referring to the common video game trope of using yellow paint to help guide the player.
“Follows a hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He soon finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive,” reads the synopsis. I wonder if this hospital is associated with the sinister Umbrella Corporation?
Resident Evil will arrive in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
