The world of video games is filled with a plethora of sandbox building games, making it a collection of genres where it’s hard to stand out.
That’s not stopping the developers of Valorborn, “a living medieval fantasy sandbox RPG,” that appears to be pulling from inspirations across the past few decades.
Perhaps the easiest way to sell you on this game is to mention its similarities with Valheim, the Viking survival game that combined hunting, building, and history.
Just one look at the trailer and screenshots for Valorborn will have you thinking of the adventures you’ve had previously, but this time you’ll be pulled into a medieval that feels distinctly different.

Of course, there’s the familiar harvesting of materials, gathering building supplies and exploring the local area with a view to expand.
However, there’s much more under the surface, with fully explorable buildings, caves, and possibly dungeons.
Getting a glimpse inside the buildings found throughout the world, you get the feeling that we’re drifting into The Sims territory, or the management aspects of Sim City.
You’ll be able to set out on this adventure solo, or with a group of friends, each with your own highly customisable character.
While there’s not a great amount of detail about combat, the game’s page on Steam does hint at players becoming fearsome warriors wielding huge swords, or sinking into the shadows as an assassin.
So, it seems survival here isn’t just a battle with the elements and local wildlife, but whether this wanders off into fantasy realms, or you’ll be dealing with other humans encroaching on your space, we’ll have to wait to find out.
Sure to appeal to fans of the genre, Valorborn could also appeal to those wanting a more customisable approach to games like Kingdom Come Deliverance II, so if you fit this remit, then keep your eyes on this future release.
