I don’t know what it is about scaring the jeepers out of myself, but when it comes to horror games and movies, I just can’t get enough. I adore franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and movies like Hereditary and Midsommar - they just mess me up. But in a good way.

As such, I’m always keen to inject any upcoming horror offerings from any medium directly into my eyeballs, as it were. For that reason, I am very ready to accept a new spooky overlord into my life, and Kickstarter game The Hauntings looks to be ticking those boxes quite nicely.

Check out the teaser trailer for the game right here.

Being made in Unreal Engine 5, The Hauntings promises to be “one of the most realistic looking ghost hunting games” on the market, which is certainly aiming high. While you can play it on your ones, which might make it scarier, you can also play with up to three other people online.

You’ll be seeking out ghosts (much like in the very popular Phasmophobia) but with an emphasis on realistic, grounded ‘techniques’ such as audio recorders and motion sensors etc in order to contain the AI controlled ghost. There will be five maps to exorcise; Dreamers Diner, Fairvale Gold Mine, Paradise Motel, Crystal Lake National Forest, and the Smith’s Grove Farmhouse which all seem to fit the horror genre tropes quite nicely.

The longer you take to investigate the ghost, the more volatile it will become and can use nefarious tricks such as possessing team members, damaging them physically and dragging them around as the game goes on. You don’t even have to banish the ghost if you catch it, you can also choose to just go home. Which I guess is quite nice but also… I don’t know why you’d do that.

As I mentioned, the game is currently on Kickstarter with the devs, Warka Development, hoping to get £175,000 to cover costs before an estimated 2022 release period on PC, with PlayStation and Xbox releases as stretch goals.
