Dead good

You wouldn’t think it to look at the studio’s multiplayer-focused output these days, but there was a time when Rockstar Games used to make the best single-player DLC around.

Games like GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption received massive expansions that offered new adventures and fun twists on the original games. But it was the latter title that got what is arguably the greatest DLC of all time: Undead Nightmare

For those that don’t know, Undead Nightmare was the excellent 2010 add-on Red Dead Redemption. It dared to blow our expectations out of the water, telling a story entirely unconnected from the main game in which John Marston suddenly found himself fighting off waves of zombies in a thrilling survival horror adventure.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched, fans assumed a sequel to Undead Nightmare would only be a matter of time. They were wrong.

Rockstar Games has made it clear it would rather focus on updating Red Dead Online, meaning any hope for an official Undead Nightmare 2 died long ago. Fortunately, there are fans out there who have put together a number of brilliant mods that aim to replicate the experience of a proper sequel to the DLC over the past few years - although this most recent attempt is perhaps the best yet.

Dick Hertz and Eki’s Undead Nightmare 2 – Origins mod is so impressive that if you didn’t know it was the work of two fans you’d assume it was the real deal. The mod introduces zombies to the towns, forests, and mountains of Red Dead Redemption 2’s massive open world. Take a look below!

The level of detail is astounding. Shops and saloons are boarded up as residents cower inside from the undead, while police do battle with the monsters on the streets. With overhauled music and new weather effects added in, this really is the ultimate wild west zombie apocalypse. Check it out for yourself and see how long you manage to survive.
