Halo: Campaign Evolved, the Unreal Engine 5 remake of the beloved 2001 original, has received a terrifying free mod that restores a Halo 3 Flood feature, changing how the infamous enemies behave and the gameplay experience.
While the remake delivers a solid take on the legendary campaign, its post-launch reception hasn't been great, with developer Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) essentially being closed down and merged with Activision. That said, Activision's Call of Duty veterans could help get the beloved Xbox franchise back on track and restore its glory days.
Perhaps if Halo: Campaign Evolved had included gameplay mechanics like those in this free mod, inspired by Halo 3, widely considered one of the best games in the series, the remake might have fared better. We'll never know.

So, what exactly does āFlood Infection Restoredā change in Halo: Campaign Evolved? Letās get into it.
- Flood infection returns: Infection forms can attack Marines, crewmen and Elites, turning them into Flood combat forms.
- Living enemies can be infected: Infection forms can now attack living enemies as well as reanimate the dead.
- Brutal transformation animations: Victims are wrestled to the ground before transforming, just like in Halo 3.
- Combat forms rise from bodies: Infected victims now have a proper resurrection animation instead of simply appearing upright.
- Bodies and weapons stick around: Corpses and dropped weapons can remain for up to 10 minutes, making battles feel more chaotic.
- Removes the 120-object limit: An optional, reversible DLL patch lets bodies and dropped weapons remain in the environment for longer, until the game needs to clear them.

Itās worth noting, however, that as fantastic as this mod is, Brutes are not infected by āFlood Infection Restoredā. Hopefully, that can be something added via an update by the modder one day. And of course, this mod is exclusive to PC and is not possible on consoles.
Hereās what we said about Halo: Campaign Evolved
āIf this is the standard going forward, Halo might well and truly be back, and Iām already hungry for a remake of Halo 2 next,ā we said in our GAMINGbible review, scoring Halo: Campaign Evolved an āExceptionalā 9/10.
āThe main game was exceptional, and the Remix mode adds so much replay value for both single-player and multiplayer playthroughs. It was only the prequel missions that I found to be a tad disappointing, but I wouldnāt go as far as to say they were bad or unenjoyable. I just wish they were a little bit more.ā
Halo: Campaign Evolved is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
