Ubisoft Has Pulled The Plug On A Divisive 2019 Game

Ubisoft has announced that it's ending all support for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the poorly received 2019 tactical shooter.

Released in October 2019, Breakpoint was widely regarded as a hot mess. While it had promise as a tactical sandbox shooter that could be played with friends, it was ultimately let down by a tedious open world, repetitive missions, and more bugs than a motel bed.

Take a look at the game in action below:

Now, just a few months after using Breakpoint to flog its rubbish NFTs, Ubisoft has confirmed that the game's most recent update was its last. Multiplayer servers will remain open for those that are interested, but in every other sense? It's game over, man. Game over.

"The last four months marked the release of our final piece of content: the brand new Operation Motherland mode, tons of new items including 20th anniversary iconic outfits and Quartz items for Ghost Recon Breakpoint," Ubisoft wrote in statement on the Ghost Recon Twitter account.

"We will continue to maintain our servers for both Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint and we truly hope you will continue to enjoy the game and have fun playing in solo or co-op with your friends."

Despite a negative initial reception, Ubisoft tried valiantly to keep players interested in Breakpoint. The game received a number of updates over the past few years, including content based on Terminator, Splinter Cell, and even Predator. Unfortunately, none of this was able to prevent the game from maintaining an incredibly low user score on Metacritic.

Here's hoping the in-development Splinter Cell game fares better, eh? Based on what we've already heard, Ubisoft is looking to keep Sam Fisher's next adventure as a linear stealth action game, which is promising. If Breakpoint taught us anything, it's that not every game needs to be an open world.
