Would this have been better than what we got?

The Stranger Things Season 5 finale was originally going to feature a line of dialogue linking back to the most bizarre lore in the series, but it was scrapped.

There was a lot riding on Stranger Things’ fifth and final season, but unfortunately its final episode missed the mark on so many levels that many viewers began theorising that it wasn’t the finale at all, and that a secret wrap-up episode was on the way.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the case and while Stranger Things’ grand finale wasn’t as bad as Game Of Thrones, it did leave a lot of viewers wanting more.

Now so much information is coming out from the cast and Duffer Brothers about the thought process behind the fifth season, including scenes and dialogue that was cut from the final draft.

Jamie Campell Bower who plays Vecna in the fourth and fifth season recently spoke on the Jimmy Fallon show about some of this cut-content, including a line of dialogue linking Vecna and Joyce during the final confrontation.

“I wanted to try and convey the words 'please don’t'," began Bower.

“I don’t know if anybody here has seen The First Shadow, which is the play they’ve done of Stranger Things and the sort of Henry Creel backstory, and obviously Henry and Joyce, within that, have met each other.”

For those who haven’t watched the stage play Henry, Creel and Joyce are all depicted as being in the same class at school, a connection that’s become a bit of a meme amongst fans.

Bower went on to say that during Vecna and Joyce’s final meeting he “felt like in that moment, that the humanity could come through a little bit more.”

“So we tried it” Bower continued,” and it worked, and it was great. Anyway, we get to ADR for season five. I’m like gurgling, and I’m like I remember all I wanted to say was ‘please don’t’, and we try it, and it just didn’t work. It didn’t land, but the emotion is there.”

I actually really like this, it’s a shame it had to be cut from the finale. It works on several levels, for people who’ve seen the play and know the significance of both characters sharing the screen together, and those who don’t and are just seeing Vecna desperate at the end of his life.

I’m not saying it would have fixed the finale, but it would have been a cool nod nonetheless.
