Star Wars fans losing their minds over surprise sequel announcement

It's about time

It is hard to believe that it has been 48-years since the Star Wars trilogy was first released but more importantly, that it has been 38-years since the best Star Wars parody film followed suit.

Well, that is definitely the case for the space opera parody film Spaceballs which was released way back in 1987 as a parody of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Co-written, produced, and directed by Mel Brooks, Spaceballs starred Bill Pullman, John Candy, and Rick Moranis with the parody movie focusing on sci-fi and fantasy franchises such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, and Transformers.

Now, after three decades, a sequel is in production and is set to hit cinemas in 2027 with Mel Brooks returning for the reboot/sequel.

The sequel was first announced last June but now a teaser trailer has been released with the almost 99-year old Brooks revealing the release date.

As well as Brooks, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman are also set to return for Spaceballs 2 which is all the more surprising considering that Moranis has not been in the limelight since his role in Brother Bear back in 2004.

However, he will be back as Dark Helmet to star alongside Brooks’ Yogurt and Bill Pullman’s Lone Starr so this sequel must be worth it.

The teaser trailer was also quick to make fun of how many sci-fi related movies we have seen since Spaceballs was released back in 1987.

This includes: multiple Star Wars projects, two Dunes, seven Jurassic Parks, almost five Avatar movies, 36 Marvel movies (featuring two Robert Downey Jr.’s), two attempts at a DCU, several versions of The Lion King (both animated and live-action), and finally Oppenheimer.

Now it is time for Spaceballs to make a return and fans were losing their minds over the surprise trailer.

“Holy s*it, if this is a triumphant return to the big screen for Rick Moranis, I am going to space nut,” one very excited comment read.

“I admire him for leaving acting behind to look after his kids but the chance to see that legend again would be so good.”

Another user agreed, adding, “Is this f**king real? No way. Please don't do this. Is this AI because I'm going to lose my s**t right now? EDIT: Oh my god, it is real. Oh my god. It's happening.”

I told you that they are losing their minds.

Spaceballs 2 is set to be released some time in 2027.
