Star Wars fan petition to save The Acolyte hits over 15k signatures

An admirable effort

Oooh, this one is definitely gonna ruffle some feathers.

Disney’s latest Star Wars show The Acolyte recently got cancelled. Now, the fan response to this show was mixed (to put things lightly) so the reaction to the news of its cancellation ranged from sadness to genuine happiness.

Take a look at our interview with the cast of The Acolyte below

Sometimes the negative voices on the internet are the loudest however, which is why even I was surprised to learn that The Acolyte has a relatively large fanbase behind it - at least, if the petition that just popped up on Change.org is anything to go by.

The petition, simply called “Renew the Acolyte”, started a couple of days ago and has somehow already received over 17,000 signatures.

Most of the signatures seem to have been generated today however, with over 13,000 people signing the petition in the last 24 hours.

The petition was started by someone going by the name of Blue Smith, who went into great detail regarding their desire to see the show renewed for a second season.

The Acolyte opened the doors for so many Star Wars fans, new and old, to feel seen” they stated in the intro to the petition, “…to feel welcomed and accepted by an IP and fandom that hadn’t previously been so for anyone who didn’t check off certain boxes.”

The folks signing the petition are equally passionate if the comments left alongside the signatures are anything to go by.

“I want to see original Star Wars material be given the opportunity thrive.” stated Brandy Mebane. “Shows with POC leads are rare and representation in an IP such as Star Wars can positively influence a generation of children.”

Now, whilst their hearts are in the right place, I don’t see this petition succeeding in the long run.

Not to be a downer, but Disney have proven several times before that they’re a profit-orientated company.

Unfortunately for The Acolyte, it was simply too expensive to produce and didn’t pull in enough viewers to justify the budget - at least if the reports of its $670,000 per minute costs are anything to go by.

I would love to be proven wrong, but personally I’d suggest that the petitioners keep their expectations low on this one.
