Star Wars fans have debated for years whether Obi-Wan's decision to keep Luke’s last name was a wise move.

Not only have they criticised the veteran Jedi for not changing Luke’s name, but Star Wars fans have also called out Obi-Wan for choosing Tatooine as the ideal hiding spot.

This isn’t the first time fans have aired their doubts about Obi-Wan.

People have also wondered why Obi-Wan never changed his own name despite his being one that Darth Vader would instantly recognise.

Have you checked out Star Wars Outlaws yet?

Thankfully, Star Wars has quietly explained Obi-Wan's reasoning.

Answers just keep on coming, for we’ve also finally learnt why Obi-Wan took the risk of keeping Luke’s surname.

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a risk at all.

In the 'Darth Vader' comic series, which is set after the events of A New Hope, Vader’s obsession to discover who blew up the Death Star all but consumes him.

Not to throw a spanner in the works here, but Luke didn’t blow the Death Star up by himself; but we digress...

After hiring Boba Fett to learn the pilot’s identity, and this information being relayed back to Vader, Vader travels to Tatooine to look upon what’s left of Luke’s childhood home.

In this same issue, Vader reveals that Obi-Wan was right to hide Luke on the planet because it’s a place Vader didn’t want to return to; too many painful memories reside there.

Not that this stops Vader from declaring Obi-Wan “a failure” despite his cunning.

We’d hardly call hiding Vader's son for a decade a failure, but Vader clearly needs this, so we’ll leave him to his delusions.

Maybe now that a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi is coming, we’ll get even more answers to those little mysteries that have niggled away in our minds for decades.

Even if it doesn’t, at least we can finally put an end to all the Obi-Wan slander once and for all.
