Disney has officially revealed that Chris Hemsworth won’t be reprising his role for a new MCU project this year, but what does this mean for the character’s future moving forward?
Back in May this year, Chris Hemsworth posted a weirdly solemn video on his official YouTube channel titled “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor”, which many misconstrued to mean that the actor was stepping away from the role permanently.
He later clarified that the video was simply meant to be a sort of celebration of his time playing the character, and not a tearful ode that implied he was quitting, but the situation was exacerbated by Kevin Feige’s comments that Avengers: Doomsday would serve as the intro for a “reset” for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Unfortunately, even though Hemsworth tried his best to clarify things, the damage had already been done, and many are certain that Thor will be one of the last remaining Avengers to bite the dust at the end of Avengers: Secret Wars.

Disney’s latest announcement regarding Thor in the next MCU series, Marvel Zombies, has once again reignited the speculation that Hemsworth won’t be reprising the role in the future, as another actor has been cast to voice the role for the upcoming miniseries.
As spotted by CBR’s Deana Carpenter, the full cast list for Marvel Zombies is finally out, and it states that Thor will be voiced by Greg Furman.
In case you’re curious as to why this is such a big deal, considering several cast members didn’t reprise their roles in the first season of What If…?, that’s because the majority of the MCU’s actors are returning to voice their respective characters in Marvel Zombies.
This includes some big hitters such as Simu Liu, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Hailee Steinfeld, and Elizabeth Olsen, which more than implies that Hemsworth’s not reprising his role wasn’t a matter of budgetary restraints.

But is this enough evidence to confirm that Hemsworth won’t be returning to the role in the future? Not quite, personally, but it’s not exactly helping things.
I think it’s fair to say that the chances of Thor not making it out of Avengers: Secret Wars are pretty high at this point, but that doesn’t mean that the door will be fully shut on his return down the line (especially if the rumours of Chris Evans’ return end up being proven true).
We’ll have to wait to see what the MCU even looks like, post-Doomsday, before we can make any kind of educated guess, though.
