MCU phase 7 ‘soft reboot’ and recasts leave fans torn

Avengers, reassemble?

Marvel fans are bracing for an MCU “soft reboot” that may occur in or just after Phase Seven, and many are torn.

Now and again, whether it’s video games, TV or movies, we’ll encounter a reboot at some point. Reboots can be used to breathe new life into a long-running and popular series or essentially wipe the slate clean if it sucks.

With that in mind, Marvel fans are torn over the prospect of a soft reboot that may happen in Phase Seven of the MCU.

Check out the Avengers: Doomsday cast teaser below!

We’re currently near the end of MCU Phase 5, which will conclude with Thunderbolts* on 2 May before The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicks off Phase Six on 25 July 2025.

We’re a good couple of years away from Avengers: Secrets Wars in 2027 which by that point, the “Multiverse Saga” will be in full swing and Phase Six will come to an end.

We don’t know what movies will be released in Phase Seven, but many will be hoping that it will finally see the X-Men team in the MCU. With that in mind, Marvel fans have been discussing the prospect of the aforementioned “soft reboot”.

“The rumoured post-Secret Wars 'soft reboot’ will resurrect and recast classic MCU Avengers, while still maintaining most of the continuity,” claimed Redditor LawyerLanky1284.

“Popular characters like Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, T'Challa I, and Natasha Romanoff will be recast. However, I think Marvel will retain more of the MCU's continuity than we might assume,” they continued.

“For example, let's say post-Secret Wars, the X-Men and Fantastic Four will be integrated into the MCU's past, having always existed and having fought alongside the Avengers. This could lead to several ways that the classic characters could be brought back.”

Just a heads up, LawyerLanky1284 goes into a ton of spoilers for mostly MCU Phase Three, so you have been warned.

“I really hope not,” replied Eother24.

“The return of Robert Downey Jr. shows us something. Nostalgia trumps everything. Marvel isn't recasting anyone unless it has to, therefore, we shouldn't expect a noticeable reboot,” replied justin21586.

“I think they can keep going with new characters,” suggested MrMegaPhoenix. “It’ll be about 20 years from Iron Man until Secret Wars. There’s just no rush to do any recasting of Avengers.”

“This sounds incredibly complicated, but sloppy at the same time. Soft reboots are for cowards. Do a full reboot or nothing at all,” exclaimed PlanetLandon.

“This is a terrible idea and makes no sense,” said Notorious_DCJ4390.

Marvel and Disney will inevitably trigger a reboot of sorts at some point, but it’s anyone’s guess as to when that will happen. Of course, we’ll always keep you updated.
