The fate of Captain Marvel hangs in the balance as the fandom remains torn about what should happen to this superhero.
Die-hard Marvel fans, put your knowledge of Captain Marvel aside one second, for this discourse isn’t about their comic book fate but their MCU one.
As we know, the two, while often interconnected, don’t necessarily need to share the same timeline of events.

We’ve become so used to the MCU's timeline of events that it’s causing fans to feel torn over how the current MCU will end.
What will become of Marvel's Agatha in Agatha All Along?
The fact that it will end, or should we say change, is leading to questions being asked about heroes like The Marvels and Captain Marvel.

In a Marvel subreddit discussion started by 2muchedu, they asked what would become of these characters now that their MCU stories have “failed so spectacularly”.
“Captain Marvel was planned to be an A list character who, unfortunately, cannot remain one. I actually liked the movie, but the results speak for themselves,” the OP argued.
This isn’t to say that the fans believe the characters and their films are without merit – there are quite a few comments that talk about how “awesome” they are.
Unfortunately, with the box office numbers having not reflected this, their future is unstable regardless of how much some fans enjoyed the films.

User peppersge believes that Captain Marvel is better off being a “supporting member” of the MCU lineup rather than a lead character.
They said, “Captain Marvel probably is best off ending up like the Hulk as a C-lister hero who is more of a supporting member.”
Some fans theorise that the issue lies with how audiences react to a film before it even comes out.
“It's kinda hard to want to go see a movie when before it's even released everyone is taking a big shit all over it...” remarked PirateBaran.

“I went and saw the first on the same day as the Shazam movie and the only one I wanted to see again and did was Captain Marvel... Everyone hated Quantumania but I thought that was the better of the three because they didn't rehash the same joke again...”
Fans are no closer to reaching an agreement about Captain Marvel, which is arguably part of the reason why the MCU rendition of the hero has suffered so much.
We’re all too undecided.
