The controversial casting of ‘Lady Voldemort’ in the Harry Potter reboot from HBO may have already been decided.
Whether it’s the original novels from JK Rowling or the blockbuster movie adaptations, the Harry Potter universe is one of the biggest franchises in modern history.
From the very beginning, we’ve been on an emotional journey with its fair share of ups and downs with the beloved trio, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Not to mention all the friends and villains that they’ve met along the way.
Especially when it comes to movie adaptations from Warner Bros. Pictures, fans worldwide have formed strong connections not only with the characters of the Wizarding World but also with the talented actors who bring those characters to life.

Over the years, there have been several recasts in the Harry Potter movies, such as Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore, as well as Jennifer Smith and Jessie Cave, who played Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood, to name just two.
So, recasting in this franchise is nothing new, and the upcoming reboot from HBO is no exception, with a new Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, Rubeus Hagrid (Nick Frost), Severus Snape (Paapa Essiedu), and more already confirmed.
Recent rumours have claimed that the new casting for the sinister Lord Voldemort could be played by a female, which, if true, would also impact his backstory, when he was known as Tom Riddle.
However, the potential casting of the new Dark Lord is not yet set in stone, or is it? As brought to our attention by the Twitter account, ‘Daily Harry Potter’, Tilda Swinton is being lined up to play Lady Voldemort (excuse the horrid AI picture in the tweet).

Tilda Swinton is a fantastic actress, spanning from 1996, and MCU fans may recognise her as ‘The Ancient One’ from Doctor Strange and Avengers: Endgame.

If the folks at HBO were to go the female route for Lord Voldemort, I believe that Tilda Swinton not only has the acting skills to pull it off but also a unique look that sets her apart from most.
Personally, I also think that Gwendoline Christie would be great in the role too, who has starred in Game of Thrones, The Sandman and Wednesday, to name a few.
Of course, these are mere rumours at this time, so we should take this information with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. That being said, as always, we’ll update you once we learn more.
The Harry Potter HBO reboot is expected to be released sometime during early 2027.
