Batman fans divided over live-action Robin casting in DCU

Batman fans divided over live-action Robin casting in DCU

A new live-action iteration of the character is long overdue

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU will officially make its debut later this year, with production already well underway on several projects.

Whereas Marvel opts for numbered phases amidst larger sagas, the DCU will subtitle its first chapter ‘Gods and Monsters’.

The animated Creature Commandos is set to be the chapter’s first project, debuting on streaming service Max on 5 December this year and concluding on 16 January 2025.

Following on from Peacemaker, the series will see Amanda Waller put together a group of monsters after the Suicide Squad and Team Peacemaker put too many human lives in jeopardy.

The DCU’s first live-action project will then be Superman with David Corenswet in the titular role as Clark Kent.

That film is targeting a 11 July 2025 release.

The precise release slate beyond that is up in the air, but we do know that The Brave and the Bold is one of the film’s in development.

Set to be directed by Andy Muschietti (The Flash), the film will explore lesser-known members of the Bat-Family - predominantly Batman’s son Damian Wayne, a known version of Robin.

It’s also believed that Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II might introduce a take on Robin, a film which exists in the DCU’s Elseworlds timeline.

Regardless of the project, DC fans have actively taken to discussing their Robin casting picks.

We’re still awaiting that Superman trailer, but Marvel has granted fans their first look at Thunderbolts*. Take a look below.

“If this was a few years back, I’d happily give a vote to Ryan Potter. While he wound up getting picked up for the Titans series as Gar, he had campaigned for a shot at Robin while Affleck was still Bats. At this point though, he’s aged out,” wrote Reddit user OldSnazzyHats.

Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard also popped up as a possible option, as did actor Jacob Tremblay who voiced the character in the animated Harley Quinn TV series.

Others simply suggested that anyone “young and unknown” would fit the bill.

Many questioned whether Robert Pattinson’s take on Batman is ‘old enough’ to justify having a sidekick in the form of Robin.

I have to say, I find it much harder to envision Robin fitting into that world compared to something tailor-made like The Brave and the Bold.

As is often the case, only time will tell what lies in store.
