Dave Bautista is reported to be in talks for a role in a ‘GoW’ adaptation, but just not the one he was originally campaigning for.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star has been attached to a Gears of War movie since at least 2018, expressing on several occasions how he’s wanted to play Marcus Fenix in live-action form.
But now it’s reported that he’s now in talks to star in a slightly different ‘GoW’ adaptation, apparently being cast to take over as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s God of War television series.
As reported by Variety, Bautista is in talks to take over from original lead star Ryan Hurst following the actor’s injury on set.

Hurst was cast in January 2026, but had to leave the project in June following a torn bicep injury he received on set. The decision was then made to recast the lead role, despite four episodes already being filmed.
What followed was weeks of speculation regarding which actor could tackle the role next, with rumours telling of WWE star Braun Strowman in possible talks to join the series.

Dave Bautista finally could get his perfect GoW role
We reckon Bautista is a good bet for this role though. The role of Kratos demands an impressive muscular physique, something that would be difficult for any actor to prepare for on short notice.
Bautista, however, has been in good physical shape throughout his entire career, from his early days as a wrestler to his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Drax the Destroyer.
Aside from this though, we also believe Bautista has the emotional gravitas to play the more sensitive side of Kratos as well. Having the character be this incredibly large, muscular force of nature is one thing, but Kratos’ quieter, more reflective moments are what makes him such an interesting character.
The actor had previously stated on numerous occasions that playing Marcus Fenix in a live-action Gears of War game would be a “dream role”, so it’ll be interesting to see how he slides into this other ‘GoW’ role if he’s selected.
“I’ve been pursuing Gears of War for years now. I believe it’s in the hands of Universal Studios. And I’ve been knocking on their door and badgering them and they are so sick of me (laughs), phoning in and asking them where they are with that project. But, yes, Marcus Fenix is absolutely a dream role for me. I want that role.”
After making a name for himself in wrestling since 1999, Bautista grew his fame as an actor in the 2010s after becoming known for playing Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most notably the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
He has also played big roles in films like Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Blade Runner 2049, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Spectre.
