Much like BioShock 4, the highly anticipated BioShock movie adaptation also seems to be stuck in development hell since it was first announced back in 2022.
Adapted for Netflix, the BioShock movie would, of course, be based on the iconic video game with the same name which was developed by 2K Games back in 2007.
Followed by two further entries, BioShock 2 in 2010 and BioShock Infinite in 2013, BioShock 4 was finally announced shortly after.
However, we all know what happened next as BioShock 4 has been stuck in development hell since 2019 with multiple delays, development shake-ups and even complete overhauls.

That is why fans have at least been feeling optimistic about the BioShock movie but a recent update may just dampen that hope.
Following an interview with The Direct following the release of his new film The Long Walk, producer Roy Lee shared an update on the BioShock movie which is set to be directed by Francis Lawrence.
When asked about the film and if there was anything he could share, Lee said, “Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps. But it’s definitely going to be based on the first ‘BioShock’ game…”
With BioShock widely being regarded as the best instalment in the franchise, this is good news indeed but Lee was not done there.

“Well, ‘The Long Walk‘ became a reality because ‘BioShock‘ was delayed for a little bit where we had to do some more script work,” he continued.
“And so as the script work is being done, we shot ‘The Long Walk,’ and he was already committed to doing the next ‘Hunger Games‘ movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the ‘Hunger Games’ is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.”
The next Hunger Games movie refers to Sunrise on the Reaping which is currently being filmed in Spain ahead of a November 2026 release.
That means that BioShock will be next on the docket.

So the good news is that the movie is still in the works but it may still be a few years until we see it if filming does not begin until after November next year.
This could take us to some time in 2027 if we are lucky.
Who knows? We may just have BioShock 4 by then but after a complete team switch-up in recent months, that seems unlikely.
As a big fan of the BioShock franchise, I am still remaining hopeful and hopefully both the movie and the game will be worth it.
