Amazon is removing a popular feature and is moving it behind a paywall, causing mass backlash from subscribers.

In a move that would likely make Vought International proud, the big, bad corporation of The Boys, Amazon, is removing a popular standard feature from its prescription service and will charge customers more to access it again.

What Prime Video Feature Is Being Removed?

As brought to our attention by Culture Crave, Amazon is removing 4K streaming from the standard Prime Video tier and is hiding it exclusively behind a paywall for the ad-free tier.

Oh, and to make matters worse, the ad-free tier is also being priced at $5 a month, up from $3, and, understandably, Amazon Prime Video subscribers are not happy about this.

Interestingly, the controversial change is made ahead of the fifth and final season of the popular anti-superhero comic adaptation, The Boys.

“There is no change in cost to the Amazon Prime membership,” reads a blog post on the official About Amazon website. “Prime Video Ultra will be available in the U.S. for $4.99 a month. The new subscription will include up to five concurrent streams, up to 100 downloads, and exclusive access to 4K/UHD streaming.”

What Is the Community Saying?

“Streaming from wallets,” said LeeKirton77.

“We spent ten years destroying cable TV just so we could rebuild it from scratch, but this time it’s scattered across eight different apps, and we have to pay a microtransaction to see the pixels. Incredible work, everyone,” exclaimed TechToonDaily.

“How much money does Jeff Bezos want?” asked Koviett, referring to the founder and chairman of Amazon.

“Streaming really mastered the art of making you pay more for the privilege of getting back what you already had,” replied Georgehanu. “How many 'premium features' are just yesterday’s default settings with new branding?”

One of the perks of my current Amazon subscription is that it streams in 4K, and I’m not keen on that being taken away, unless I cough up more cash.

Nowadays, companies tend to implement ads in the service, and if we want to remove them, we also have to pay more. Which can be very frustrating, especially when those ads drop during tense or emotional scenes. It often feels like we’re paying more for less.

The final season of The Boys premieres on Wednesday, 8 April and will consist of eight episodes, ending on 20 May 2026. Will you be watching it in standard or 4K?
