Tomb Raider Surprise New Release Appears, We're So Back

We can't believe it

Tomb Raider might appear to be a dead franchise but we can assure you it’s very much alive, just biding its time.

While it’s had more love on the big-screen as of late, the games are still incredibly fun and a new title is on the way; we just haven’t had a good look at it yet.

In the meantime and if you haven’t already, you should definitely check out the OG PlayStation Tomb Raider games, which were re-released on modern platforms some time ago.

At the time of writing, you can play through six of Lara Croft’s adventures across two collections, and according to the latest leaks and rumours, there are more remasters on the way…

On a similar note, there’s something else new on the way for Tomb Raider fans to sink their teeth into, though we should preface that it’s not an official release.

A new project called Tomb Forge is currently in the works for those who primarily play on PC, and will allow Tomb Raider fans to create their own adventures for Lara Croft to take on.

It’s essentially a level editor that’ll support a variety of assets and gameplay types so you can make your own dungeons and temples to play through.

Tomb Raider fan and game developer Tiernan Watson announced the project on X, saying, “New project in the works! Introducing TombForge - a custom Tomb Raider game engine built from scratch for the development of modern Tomb Raider levels!”

A list of features was provided that included “PBR rendering, TRA animations, a TRAOD GMX importer and more to come”.

It sounds like the perfect tool for those who love the OG Tomb Raider games, want more, but don’t want to wait for more remasters.

Basically, rather than waiting for Square Enix to produce a new game, the fans have decided they’ll just make their own, which I respect massively.

You can find some early looks at Tomb Forge on Tiernan’s X account and, of course, if you’re interested, keep an eye out for updates on the level tool for its full release.

As for the next Tomb Raider game, some interesting details have surfaced for it, including one that hints Lara Croft’s next adventure will be open-world, but please do take that with a pinch of salt for the time being.

When an official reveal for a new game does drop, we'll be sure to bring that news to you.
